What is ENUM ?

ENUM is a new system that allows your companies VOIP system (and users) to have a unique registered internet address.

This is important because, once registered, your system can make and receive calls to other registered users for free. As VoIP systems grow around the world, so will the number of people and business that you can call for free!

ENUM is a worldwide standard and in the UK it is administered by Nominet.

ENUM is sometimes known as telephone number mapping.

Technically it makes it possible to relate a domain name to a telephone number, and then use that domain name to identify various communications devices such as fax, mobile phone, voice mail, email, IP telephony addresses or web pages.

The majority of Internet users are probably only familiar with domain names in combination with web sites or email addresses.

A ENUM address looks like  0.1.9.5.3.7.3.5.4.8.4.4.e164.arpa where '44' is the UK's international dialling code and the rest of the number represents the OCM main office number (reversed). 'e164' is the name of the telephone numbering system and '.arpa' is the Internet infrastructure equivalent of .uk or .com.

A computer can understand and connect to this address in a fraction of a second which makes ENUM a quick, stable and cheap link between the telecommunications system and the Internet.

All the solutions provided by OCM support ENUM.
