Charity Cyber Essentials Awareness Month is an annual campaign in October that aims to educate charities about cyber threats and the benefits of Cyber Essentials. The campaign is run by IASME in partnership with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and other Certification Bodies such as OCM.

The campaign offers free support and guidance to charities, including a discount on the cost of certification.

Cyber Essentials is a crucial safeguard for UK charities, who are increasingly targeted by cybercriminals seeking to exploit their valuable data and often limited resources. By implementing Cyber Essentials' five basic technical controls, charities can establish a strong foundation of cybersecurity, protecting sensitive donor and beneficiary information from common cyber threats like phishing, malware, and hacking attempts. Achieving Cyber Essentials certification not only demonstrates a commitment to data protection and fosters trust among stakeholders, but also helps charities meet legal and regulatory requirements, potentially opening doors to funding opportunities and partnerships. In essence, Cyber Essentials empowers charities to focus on their vital missions with the confidence that their digital assets are secure.

#1 - What is Cyber Essentials ?

Cyber Essentials is a UK certification scheme that demonstrates an organisation's minimum level of cyber security protection. It's backed by the UK government and overseen by the NCSC. To achieve certification, businesses must complete and submit a self-assessment questionnaire and provide relevant evidence..

#2 - How does a charity get Cyber Essentials ?

The process is :-

  • Self-Assessment: The charity completes a detailed questionnaire about its IT systems and security practices. This self-assessment helps identify any areas where improvements are needed to meet the Cyber Essentials requirements.

  • Verification: Once the questionnaire is completed, the charity submits it to an accredited certification body for review. The certification body verifies the information provided and checks that the charity meets all the necessary technical controls.

  • Certification: If the charity passes the verification process, they are awarded the Cyber Essentials certification, which is valid for one year.

"Taking steps to stay secure online is not an optional extra for trustees, but a core part of good governance." – Helen Stephenson, Chief Executive of the Charity Commission for England and Wales.
